When You Should Elope in Montana & How to Pick Your Date

First up, let’s chat about dates. If you ask me, any season is amazing for eloping in Montana. It all just depends on what you are looking for! Here’s what you can expect throughout the year:

  • Winter: This season carries its own magic as snow starts to fall across the state. If you choose this time of year, be prepared for cold weather! I would consider lots and lots of layers for your wedding. And, of course, why not have a fire where you can warm up once the ceremony is over? You can book a stay at a nearby ski resort so you have a place to celebrate afterward.
  • Spring: Things are starting to thaw, but it can still be pretty chilly, depending on the month. Around March, it’s pretty common to see some freezing temps and even a snowstorm or two. As you head from late April into May, things are starting to thaw, and the wildflowers are making their appearance. If you do plan on this season, I would have a contingency plan just in case the weather decides not to cooperate.
  • Summer: We’re now heading into Montana’s busy season as the weather starts to be consistently warm. You can expect highs in the 80s with an occasional heatwave here or there. If you tend to prefer cooler temps, you can take advantage of either the sunrise or the sunset. Bonus, the views are unparalleled during these hours!
  • Fall: While the crowds might be a little slimmer during this season, you’ll still see occasional spikes due to the fall festivals. You can always track down your location ahead of time and then check the calendar just to be sure. As far as the weather, it is unspeakably beautiful, with pleasant temperatures and breathtaking foliage.

Montana Elopement Locations

Montana has a variety of locations for eloping that are pretty much guaranteed to match your vibe, no matter what that is. Here are some places to consider:

  • Missoula: While this might be one of the most popular towns in Montana, it still manages to have that romantic small-town vibe. Plus, it gives you all the amenities you could need for your wedding day while still putting you next to the best spots nature has to offer! It’s perfect for a wilderness ceremony/city reception combination!
  • Glacier National Park: I always love National Park weddings, and GNP gives you some of the best locations! While the crowds might be bigger, late June through August tend to be magical, especially as the wildflowers start to bloom in front of the mountains.
  • Bozeman: this is another town that gives you big-town vibes, surrounded by the rugged countryside. You can choose from both forests and mountains for your backdrop.
  • Big Sky: This ski resort tends to be ideal for snowy winter ceremonies. Just be sure to dress warm!
  • Whitefish: If you want a ceremony in the mountains, this is your spot! The views at this resort are some of the best in the entire state.

How to Get a Montana License

Montana makes it pretty easy to apply for your license when eloping. You will get started by filling out an online application in the county where you’ll tie the knot. Once you are in the system, you will both need to appear in person at the County Clerk to pick up your marriage license. You will need to bring your driver’s license, a birth certificate, and proof of divorce if necessary. You will also want to check your location of choice and see whether or not they require permits.

What to Wear to Your Montana Elopement

Now that we’re through the boring paperwork, it’s time to talk about what to wear! When eloping in Montana, you get the freedom to take risks if you’d like. Wear the dress you’ve always wanted to wear, and throw the rules right out the window! Personally, I have always loved the look of boho dresses, especially in the rugged surroundings. You can embrace the Western aspects if you’d like with boots and a cowboy hat. And above all, dress for the weather and the location. Bring along layers, and if you need to hike to your location, wear practical shoes. Don’t worry; you can always change out of them once you arrive at your site.

Hiring a Montana Elopement Photographer

So, let’s talk a bit more about booking a photographer. I know I might seem biased, but this is one area where you won’t want to cut any corners. Most of the people who book an elopement tend to be more about creating experiences they can carry with them forever. So, when you find your photographer, you want to be sure you have someone who knows how to document this once-in-a-lifetime moment.

As a Montana elopement photographer, this is my specialty! I get the chance to travel across the country, documenting unforgettable celebrations in the dreamiest locations. So I know how to capture the surroundings you’ve so carefully chosen while still keeping you the star of the show! I can also work with you to figure out all the details that will take your ceremony and transform it into an event you’ll want to treasure for the rest of your life! I would love to have a conversation and create a custom package that will be perfect for your day.
