Congratulations, you’re engaged! Welcome to the world of weddings. Now that you’ve started searching around and planning your dream wedding, you’ve probably started to hear phrases like photojournalistic wedding photography or maybe documentary wedding photography or editorial wedding photography. You are probably wondering what do these styles mean and how do I know if this wedding photography style is right for me.
As a photojournalistic wedding photographer, I’ve photographed countless gorgeous connection filled weddings and elopements. I adore working with couples to have their dream celebration and capture the authentic, unscripted moments that define your unique wedding day. Here’s everything you need to know about photojournalistic wedding photography.
Photojournalistic wedding photography focuses on emphasizing the raw, unposed, and authentic moments of your wedding day. This style of photography aims to tell a story through candid moments and documentary-style images rather than stiff poses. Forget stiff smiles and forced poses. Your wedding day is a living, breathing story, woven with genuine emotions, spontaneous moments, and the unscripted magic that makes your love unique. As a photojournalistic wedding photographer, I’m passionate about capturing that raw, authentic beauty. With photojournalistic photography, your personality really comes through, showing your goofiness or your sentimental side and making your photos yours. In my opinion, you also get a more complete look into how your day unfolded when you choose a photojournalistic wedding photographer. You’ll get the pretty photos where everyone was photo-ready, but you’ll also get those goofy photos that show who you and your loved ones really are.
Photojournalistic wedding photography highlights your personality.
Photojournalistic photography is different than traditional photography in the sense that traditional photography is usually geared towards formal posed portraits, staged group shots, and directed interactions. he photographer takes an active role in directing the subjects, arranging poses, and controlling the composition.
Whereas photojournalism and documentary photography embraces the imperfect and the real raw emotions and moments. Photojournalistic wedding photography is emotion driven and tells your wedding day story. It is personal to you. I like to say I take photos that make you feel. By blending into the background, I observe the natural flow of your day and capture genuine interactions. It is important that you are present in this day so I let your personality take the lead while I quietly photograph the real moments. This photography focuses on the stolen glances, the heartfelt laughter, and the unexpected tears of joy that tell your story.
Look at galleries! The best way you can know what you like is to look at galleries and look at a lot of them. Think of it this way, when you’re deciding on your wedding dress, you usually don’t try on one dress or one dress style and say “yep this is good enough!”. Instead, your dress consultant urges you to try out a few styles. Treat your wedding photography the same way. Dig into the photo styles you are considering and then dig into the photographers who are a master at that style until you find one who feels right. The answer to this question is going to vary photographer to photographer. I can only speak for myself, as a photojournalistic wedding photographer, I prioritize real moments. But I also know that staged photos are necessary to complete a wedding gallery. As your wedding photographer, I set up emotional moments in photogenic locations. Then I let the moment unfold without my intervention until you cue me that you’re ready for my guidance. There will be times that need posing and prompting like family photos and bridal party portraits but even in those moments, I try to create imagery that feels real, rather than overly staged. That said, I personally do like to add in a few editorial elements to elevate your gallery but that is unique to me. Since every photographer is different, you need to ask the photographer you are considering, what their approach is.
