All You Need To Know About Planning Your Dream Arches National Park Elopement
When You Should Elope in Arches National Park & How to Pick Your Date
The very first thing you need to do when planning your elopement is picking your date. The NPS lets you schedule your wedding up to a year in advance, and you will definitely want to reserve your spot sooner rather than later.
Spring: From early March through mid-May, this season will give you the best weather. While it can definitely get warm, you won’t have all the summer desert heat. Spring is the second busiest season, so you might have to deal with other tourists through this time.
Summer: If you like it hot, you are going to adore summer in Arches! This season extends to September and really packs a punch. Be sure to stay hydrated if you do choose a summer wedding. I would also recommend a sunrise or a sunset wedding. Not only are the views spectacular, but the temps are much better. Oh, and another thing. This is the season where you’ll be competing against the highest number of tourists. Be prepared for crowds!
Autumn: If we’re being honest, fall is the best month for Arches! Spanning until late November, you are going to get the gentle spring temps without the spring crowds. With this season, you can get married any time of day!
Winter: Winters in Moab can get surprisingly cold. It’s not uncommon to catch a flurry or two during this time! If you are willing to deal with the chill, you’ll be rewarded with less crowds.
For those who want the most privacy, I would recommend a weekday. The middle of the week always sees less traffic. Also, set an alarm clock for a sunrise wedding. There will be less tourists as well as the most magical view you’ve ever seen!
Arches Elopement Locations
Arches National Park has a few different spots where you can get a permit for your wedding. While most people tend to stick with private ceremonies, you can choose locations with space for up to 80 visitors. Here are some of the most popular options:
The Windows Sections: The Windows are the most iconic spots in the entire national park, with arches that extend hundreds of feet into the air. They are scattered across two square miles, so you’ll definitely have choices! The Turret Arch, the South Window, the Double Arch, and the North Window can all hold up to 25 guests. These spots are just off the trail with some of the best views around. Be prepared for crowds!
Panorama Point: This is a paved section with stone benches that can seat up to 50 guests. While it might be a little less wild and untamed, the views are incredible!
La Sal Mountain Viewpoint: This rugged space is able to hold up to 50 guests. You’ll get married on the red clay with the stone structures just behind you.
Park Avenue: This is a paved space with an overlook. You’ll be near a parking lot with an accessible space for up to 25 guests. Be prepared for onlookers.
Delicate Arch: This smaller arch is maybe one of the most beautiful in the entire park. You can fit up to 10 guests here.
How to Get an Arches National Park License
For your wedding, you will need both a Utah marriage license and a National Park Special Use Permit. For the marriage license, you will need to apply in person at an in-state county clerk’s office. You will need a physical form of identification, such as a license or passport. There is no waiting period in Utah, so you can apply on the first day of your trip. For your event, the NPS does require that you submit a Special Use Permit. This can be completed online and will cost $185.
What to Wear to Your Elopement
One of the best things about an elopement is how much you can customize it. While some people choose to have big, lavish parties complete with designer gowns, others prefer to keep things a little more low-key with hiking boots and comfy pants. There are several things to keep in mind:
Stick with breathable fabrics: There’s a chance you are going to be moving around a lot. You don’t want to get stuck with something that will have you sweating through your wedding day. Things like linens, tulle, and lace are all perfect. If you are sticking with a winter wedding, adding layers helps!
Footwear: I know stilettos might be just the thing to complete your looks, but you don’t want to be hiking through the dust in high-end heels. Choose something practical that will last for miles (close-toe is best!). If you really want something extra, I would suggest packing ceremony shoes you can change into once you arrive.
How Much Does an Arches National Park Elopement Cost?
A lot of couples love elopements because of how much you can make them work with your budget. Here is what you will have to pay for your elopement:
Marriage license fee: Depending on the county, this will cost $0-$50
NPS Special Use Permit: $185
NPS Standard Pass: $15-$30 per guest
From there, you will want to budget for transportation, lodging, flowers, food, guest accommodations, attire, and an officiant.
